Ouyang Hsiu, alias Yung-Shu and Tsui-Wang, "The Drunkard", was a native of Chi-An, Kiang-si Province. His father passed away when he was only four years old. He was a poor chiId, but eager to learn, and at the age of twenty-four, he attained the coveted degree of "Chin-Shih" and served as an officiaI in the city of Hsi-ching. He made efforts to promote literary innovations. He had written more than one hundred voIumes, incIuding "New T'ang Poems," and "New History of the Five Dynasties. "He was a speciaIist in ancient Iiterature, history, and the classics.
