Cheng Ho, with surname Ma originally, alias Sanpao, was a Muslim from Kun-yang, Yun-nan Province. Selected as a eunuch in the palace at 10 or so, he had served Yen-wang with distinguished militiary merits. When Cheng-chu was enthroned, san-pao was given a surname Cheng, and was renamed Cheng Ho, known in the later generations as Eunuch San-pao. Over a period of some 30 years, Eunuch San-pao had voyaged by sea for seven times to the West, passing through some 35 countries including all over of Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Arab Peninsula. Indeed, he was a great voyager.
